A few years ago, I had yet to evangelize the benefits of e-commerce among businesses and students. I even made a tour of Quebec's largest urban centers with the Institute of Electronic Commerce in 1999 on behalf of IBM to promote innovative and revolutionary technology that would bring tangible benefits: the Internet. I was a kind of "fortune teller, a seer who predicted technological trends. It made me angry because somewhere, offering a vision very different from that which existed at the time, I always felt that people thought I was half.

Today it's over.

I am not obliged to make promises. Today I present the facts.

Did you know?
According to Advertising Age 20% of revenues of the largest advertising agencies in New York originated in the Web. They believe that it will be 25% within a year.

In Canada, according to the Newspaper Audience Databank Internet now reaches more people than magazines and newspapers. For 18-34 years, the Internet reaches more than radio. For 18-24 years ... it's almost as much television! You can imagine? This means that the website of a radio station could become his primary source of income, that is to say, more than its traditional broadcasting. These statistics are interesting, but the element that will really upset you is that the said information is a survey conducted by ... wait for it, 2007. In terms of the Internet is long past. The (r) social change is made even further.

A transformation of all industries
It is not difficult to believe. After all, look at your own life and ask yourself how new technologies and the Internet in particular has changed. How many times a day do you see your favorite social network (Facebook, Linked In, Twitter, etc..)? How many times per month did you make a transaction on the Internet? Do you watch your bank statements on the Web or are you going to the ATM to consult? Have you ever had a questioning in relation to a fact and went on Wikipedia to confirm the information? Well it's the same thing for companies, how they work evolve through these same principles. Moreover, it is the "invisible" to the regular user who occupies a more prominent on the Internet. A supplier who sells to its primary customer, using a place of e-business, a buyer asks its suppliers to participate in a reverse auction on the Net, a retailer asked its manufacturers to incorporate RFID technology can transmit data electronically, etc.. What the user sees on the regular web, this is only the tip of the iceberg.

The jobs that students occupy management
For this reason I believe that many students who complete marketing or information system end up working in the field of electronic commerce. The problem with this is that often they are not always adequately trained for this environment which has still some features that do not cover regular courses in management. How many times I have personally invited graduates to the tray with a huge career potential for electronic commerce and the ability to clear the area and have instead opted for a traditional training? Too often. These students are found naturally in a position of electronic commerce and poorly equipped. Then, because I'm (mostly) a good guy, I ended up giving them the coaching staff as volunteers to enable them to start at least a little good start in their new career.

What positions are available in electronic commerce?
As I already explained in a previous post, in the introductory course in electronic commerce tray under my responsibility, I ask students to create a short video to better familiarize themselves with the content creation Web. Well, here are a few decided to make a video with various career options in management of electronic commerce (it is also available on their blog that specializes in jobs for the future).

Future uses of electronic commerce?
Were you there on the Internet five years? You remember the Web1.0? You know by the Wiki, there were few social networks and most likely you buy your music store. It was 5 years ago (there are only 1825 days). Imagine what it will be in another 2000 days. I'm willing to bet my career that the continuing transformation of our industries and society will be equally important during this next phase.
In short, a career in electronic commerce is primarily an adventure.
